Brazil During World Cup_008.JPG
A small section of the favela Calabar is seen in between two residential buildings in Salvador, Brazil, Monday, June 23, 2014. Favelas like this one dot the Brazilian urban landscape, with some favela communities numbering in the hundreds of thousands of people. It is here in these communities where people live in extreme poverty, many of whom work as maids, nannies, auto mechanics and in the hospitality industry. The arrival of the World Cup has brought upon mixed feelings to the people of Brazil, many question the spending of millions of dollars for the games when Brazil is dealing with issues such as poverty, poor health care, poor education and a decaying infrastructure.
